History

The Kingdom of Benin played a significant role in West Africa from the 16th century up to the colonization by France in the late 19th century. Trade relations were established with England, Denmark, Portugal and France. A dark spot in the history of Benin is that the coast was one of the main hubs for the slave trade since the 17th century.
